I finally got the T-Rex buttoned up after replacing the Power Commander III with a PCV with Autotune. The installation is pretty easy unless you don't have a bung in you exhaust system for the o2 sensor. The Muzzy 4to1 exhaust system on mine has the bung hole.
I loaded the base map that was closest to how my T-Rex is set up into the PCV. I also updated the firmware, which was released pretty recently. Setting everything up in the software is easy. I had to take my laptop for a spin around the block with me to calibrate the throttle. After that it was time to take the wife for a ride.
I had a map in the PCIII that was tweaked by the previous owner. It was very rich but ran fast. It didn't run smoothly throughout the whole rpm range. Off the line it was very sluggish and it was hard to drive in traffic. After a few minutes of driving with the PCV with Autotune, I could feel the whole power band smooth out. It was incredible how much difference there was in engine noise and vibration. I could hear the exhaust clearly over the engine now. The exhaust noise is far more refined than it was. The shifting and takeoffs felt much better too. It almost reminded me of a throttle in an electric car. There was still a little bit of popping on deceleration, but at least it didn't sound like fireworks going down the road like it did. I'd say the popping is 10x better than it was. The only problem I had was that for some reason I failed to hook up the speed sensor correctly. I will have to fix that later. When I got home, I checked the trim table on the PVC. There were quite a few changes from the base map. I went out for another ride and switched back and forth between the base map and the map with the autotune trims. The base map was definitely not near as smooth as the map with the autotune trims.
I would recommend this upgrade to all 1400R owners with modifications. It was definitely worth the five bennies! _________________ 2007 Blue T-Rex 1400R
