I run 15/48 on my 2005 1200. It was a good change from the stock 15/50.
Running under 5000 RPM just lugs the engine - unless you are just idling around town. Around town I usually shift from first to second somewhere between 5000 and 7000.
As wayne 07 stated:
yes - you are being too cautious
No - not clutching is not faster
And, if you want to get ahead "as fast as possible", then you shift at the peak of the power curve - should be about 10000 for a stock 1200 (just like Johnny said). If you don't leave EVERYONE behind (liter bikes and TRex's excluded), then something is really wrong.
(By the way, you should learn to upshift without the clutch just to learn to control your RPMs and speed well. Then shift the same way while using the clutch.)

Thank you all for your inputs. I will try to be a bit more aggressive the next time I get a chance to take her out. |

Hey mellow,
Just read your post. When I drive calmly on my 1200, I do all my shifting around 5k. 1st gear at 5k rpm is a soft launch. If you want to pull from the pack, 8-9k is fine.
I have a 15/48 setup and it's working great for me. When you get more comfortable driving both street and freeway, you'll notice that you'll shift at higher rpms. That's my observation from then and now. |

Thanks Muggz!! That helps a lot. I'll try revving up to the 8 -9k next time I'm out. |
