Call me a rookie, but I've always been curious on when you guys shift out of first gear. I've been shifting around the 5000 - 7000 RPM range. Maybe it's just me, but 1st gear doesn't quite pull hard enough. I find myself shifting quickly into 2nd and 3rd gear just to pull away from the rest of the pack. Is it OK to rev up to say 9000 - 10000 RPM range in 1st and then shift into 2nd? I don't want to damage the engine but if anyone could shed some light into the proper shifting technique, I would really appreciate it.

Sounds like you have a 15 tooth front sprocket, change it out to a 17 tooth and you'll see a big difference

You could shift at 10 000rpm for the firts 60 000 miles no probleme. Call me a Rookie, Embarassed

Johnny,

I think you said that you don't recommend the 17 front sprocket because it ruins my 6th gear. I rather keep it stock than not have a useable 6th gear. You have to remember, my bike is a 2005 with the 1200cc engine.

if you drive with 17-48 on stock 1200cc you will loose topspeed and no acceleration in 6gear(not enough power) this is what he mean by ruin your 6th gear

it will be harder to start on first gear also

keep the 15-50 combo
best acceleration and highway cruise

So can anyone shed some light on how they shift from a dead stop? Normally for me, I take off and wait until I get to around 5000 RPM then shift into 2nd. Then, I wait til I get to around 5000 - 6000 RPM then shift into 3rd. Take off is not fast at all but I'm hesitant to push the engine in the higher RPM in 1st and 2nd gear. Am I just being too cautious with my driving? I just want to get ahead as fast as possible. Maybe not using the clutch might be faster?

i have a 17tooth sprocket and I love it. true not a lot of pull in 6th but I have more fun ripping arond town though. going to 2teeth up made a huge difference in the driveablilty of the trex for me

i run 17 -50 on a 2001 1100cc bone stock , with noooooooo problems at all..........

sure you loose top speed , but the bike is way more fun to drive....

smooter first gear, you run 1000rpm less at 100km (55mph) better fuel millage...etc

it's a choice you make...
