The ZX-14 engine is equiped with a hydraulic tensioner. Depending on your driving style, this tensioner will fail. Under normal riding these tensioners will start to fail around 12K miles - less if you are doing high revs in your lower gears. You will end up with valves slapping against the pistons. You will hear a tap-tap-tap . . . sound. Your timing chain will snap, valves will be bent - major head damage will occur. Solution is to replace the hydraulic tensioner with a solid mechancial tensioner.

Solid manual cam chain tensioners are designed to replace the automatic and hydraulic tensioners on high performance engines. The automatic adjusters can back out when the throttle is closed suddenly at high rpm. This allows the cams to go momentarely out of time, and can result in bent valves and/or serious engine damage. Hydraulic tensioners have a tendency to put too much tension on the chain guide under high rpm/high oil pressure conditions, resulting in premature wear.

Both problems can be eliminated with the installation of the solid manual tensioner. No mater what the engine does, the cam chain tension will remain constant. A solid manual cam chain tensioner is a MUST.

Cost of new solid mechanical tension is around $50. Replacing and/or rebuilding your head - $2,500. Suck a valve will mean a new engine. Do the math.
