I had this problem on my 2007, never indicate 6th gear. I found that when the engine was not running, the gear indication was OK. With the engine running and head lights off, using a switch that I have install, the gear indication was also OK. After trying many things including the gear position sensor, I think I might have solve the problem on mine. I found that Campagna's wiring was different form Kawasaki. The 3 ground wires form the ECU were connected to the ground wire of the regulator instead of being connected directly to the battery ground. I have cut those 3 wires and connected them directly to the battery ground with a 8 AWG wire. I have try with the rear on a jack and it worked!!! With the engine runing, up to 6th gear with both low and high beams on. I haven't tryed it yet on the road but there is place for optimism. I'll let you know if it also works on highway as soon as possible. My back problem dont allow me to get inside the T-REX for the moment.

Wayne, if what Phil says is true, then this is a Campagna defect and subject to a recall. A faulty ground wire does explain why we get false gear readings on the instrument panel. Naturally, more research needs to be done to verify Phil's discovery.

It looks like my modification works javascript:emoticon('Very Happy'). I made a short trip on the highway today, around 40 Km, and the gear position indicator works perfectly. On my way back, I have been caught by the police but fortunately after some explanation he only gave me a warning. He was just behind me but I was to busy looking at my meter and trying at different speed to see if the mod works. Fortunately I didn’t go much over 140 Km/h. Thank you sir!

Ok, back to the mod. Along with the ECU ground wire mod, I have also made two other modifications before but those didn’t solve the problem. The first on was the gear position sensor. When I started to work on the problem, I thought that the sensor was the problem because the resistance measured at its connector was not always as it should, but after removing it, you have to remove the reverse gearbox to do that, I found that it was within specifications. That sensor has 7 terminals (1 N 2 3 4 5 6) that are grounded one at the time by the shift drum of the transmission. I have measure the resistance between the shift drum and the engine and it was far from 0 Ohms. Sometimes open. Kawasaki’s design is not very good on that. I think that using a moving part like the shift drum as a ground without proper care is bad.
So I modified the sensor to ground the shift drum in its middle. After a short road test, I found that it helped but didn’t solve the problem. Before, the indicator wasn’t able to reach the 5th gear but after that mod, it was able to, but still not 6th.

After that disappointment, I started to look at the wiring. The wiring ground lug that is on the left behind the driver seat is not directly in contact with the chassis and that might cause problem with time. I’ve made a hole and remove the paint on the plate behind the seat belt and install the lug there but that didn’t help.

To see if the ECU ground mod will work for you, try shutting off you head lights and do a test drive. If it works, the mod will probably work for you.
Keep in mind that my T-REX is a 2007 and that the company might have change the wiring since. I hope this helps.

Phil,

I have an '07. Since my T-Rex is at Chicknfeet's garage and most of the tupperware is removed, it makes perfect sense to incorporate your suggestions. Maybe a trained mechanic would understand, but could you be more specific in your instructions. Like where is the ECU located, which color wire(s) to cut and at which pin location. Thx.

Maybe pictures would help. As they say a picture is worth a 1,000 words.

Instead of cutting the wires, can you simply run a ground wire from the regulator ground to the chassis/battery ground? scratch

GRex, I thought about that but I am not sure it would work. It could help but all the current will still pass through the main ground wire and I think that is the problem. As Kawasaki does, using separate ground for the ECU makes sens to me. My 2 cents.

The Bikes do not have this problem only the T-Rex. T-Rex should come out with a service bulletin on how to fix it. Why are we spending a lot of time trying to fix something we did not create?

Phil i got a call saturday when you test your mod on the higway 440 . lollll a green t-rex with a police car in the back with no identification on the car. lolll you lucky only a warning.

Michaelg, you are right but for me, fixing problems is almost as fun as driving the T-REX of course as long as those problems don't prevent me of using this unique machine. I usaualy work on it in the winter so I continue having fun even if there is snow outside. I already have list for next winter!!!

haya, yes that was me. I was very lucky espacially because the guy was folloing me for 6 Km and I can say I have done some high speed burst at that time. The problem is when I drive the T-REX, I don't look often in the back because I dont enjoy seeing people folloing me. My short outlaw carrier has started and ended last saturday but that's ok. I hope Sanair will be something that I like.

I think the new factory can t be resposible for the old one...... but they could help. I think Phil did a good job at this. Does the new factory will have time to work on this shortly.... Embarassed

No shit, Embarassed I did not known any 09 or 10 still have this problem.! I did not have this problem on any of my 09 or 10 that I have work on... I had this problem on many or most 07 and thaught it is been solved. I am doing work on more than 20 units (model 09 or 10 ) No one ever mention any thing about this !!!! If it s still exist yes it should be address to the factory... Aldo we never had this on before 07, it s a nice gaget ..
